You joke about “I’m sorry” but there’s a pretty delicate balance between the cartels and the government, and neither side can afford a war. Unfortunately, the cartels handing over their people to the government will likely end this for now and the balance of power will remain the same (and in the cartels’ favor).
You knew this was coming. The last thing these guys want is the Mexican government giving US military wiggle room (however limited it may be) to run some ops on the cartels. I’m sure the big bosses had visions of Navy Seals running amok in their compounds and nabbing bosses and taking out all their security forces.
FTR, I’m not advocating for this or assuming it would even be remotely feasible but you know these guys were worried about drawing scrutiny from US military.

Mexico is a failed state and has been for at least the last 20 years. They are a lot like a little Russia, all corruption, all the time.

So you’re telling me that the Mexican drug cartels hold their members more accountable than the American police…

Well, as long as they apologized.

Let’s not bicker and argue about who killed who, this is supposed to be a happy occasion.

After all, what can’t be fixed with a good honest genuine apology?

Very specific Hallmark card:
*Whoopsie do, we shot your dudes. We understand your pissy ‘tude.*
*We mistook your tourists for Hatian thugs; dissing our turf, muling drugs*
*Killed just half, which isn’t too bad; though we understand you’re sad*
*We hope this serves as fair placation. Please consider Mexico for your next vacation*

That’s better than they would have gotten if they were shot by American Police.
