So for laptops, the hollow side faces up. The two little holes on the top let you see if it’s hollow or solid. Works in all the devices I’ve tried. Obviously doesn’t help in the dark, but this has saved me so much time so far.
Edit: For vertical ports: So for laptops, the hollow side faces up. The two little holes on the top let you see if it’s hollow or solid. Works in all the devices I’ve tried. Obviously doesn’t help in the dark, but this has saved me so much time so far.
agamemnons: YSK: USBs exhibit the quantum superposition phenomenon. They are in both positions, hollow and solid side facing you, at any given time. It is only when you make an observation that their wave function collapses that you know their true orientation with still some uncertainty (as stated by Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle)
AaaawShitBuddy: This will save me literally tens of seconds per year!
nofilmynofucky: this tip seems like it would be useful if I could understand the wording
drkamikaze1: If I only knew this before switching to USB C
Tankmin: See you tell me this, but it’ll still take me 3 tries every time
alex3omg: This is confusing af.
So on the male side the open part goes down? What about if the port is on its side?
corsair027: Usually the side with the symbol goes up, or towards you.
But it still always takes me three tries, at least.
jelberquey: Good luck with my laptop, one usb is upside down, no clue why.
i_am_judging_you: I don’t understand why people have so much trouble with USB, all you need to do is make sure the USB symbol is facing up and then…
Wait… Why isn’t it going in… Did I make a mistake? No I clearly see the symbol facing up… Maybe this cheap Chinese knockoff cable is built wrong? *switches sides* WTF why isn’t it going in the other way either? Is this cable broken? Maybe this isn’t a USB port? No this *is* a USB port, I’m sure of it, what’s going on? Why isn’t this working? Why isn’t anything in my life working? What’s wrong with me that I can’t plug a damn USB plug? Am I such a failure? No wonder my dad hates me…
*switches again* oh it’s in now, cool.
overtmind: Yeikes don’t make this too difficult:
1. Holes up
2. If no holes, look at how it would be plugged in and the gap generally goes up (where the holes would be normally). Conversely, the plastic/ceramic tab inside the connector goes down.
cqxray: Hollow side up. No holes side is also the one with the seam. That’s down.
f_leaver: It doesn’t matter, you’ll still do it wrong 90% of the time, it’s a law of the universe.
biblops: Hmmm… Could you type it out a third time please?
frankwx6044: This USB cable is not directional, can be plugged in either direction. It has a thin plastic with electrical contacts on both side.
thatcoffeeeguy: I noticed that USBs have a USB symbol that should face up when you put it in
kabukistar: The hollow side of the host port or the other port?
snackarydaquiri: Or you can look at the port….
