How they make oak barrels

TIL The invention of cultured pearls largely destroyed the economy of Kuwait due to the reliance on pearl diving.
Ethnographic: Had a similar impact on Bahrain, Qatar, eastern Saudi Arabia, Oman, and parts of the UAE. There was an amazing pearl trading economy that spanned across the whole Indian Ocean (including E. Africa).
The combo of the worldwide Great Depression and the advent of the cultured pearl really rocked the region. Because of this in the 1930s Qatar was one of the absolute poorest countries in the world. Now, after the discovery of natural gas and oil, Qatar is one of the richest GDP (for citizens).
There is some amazing music (work songs and other) that the Kuwaits/Bahrainis/etc had associated with this work.
itty53: But thankfully, oil.
uuuueeeehhhh: So I guess you could say their economy… took a dive.
AdvocateSaint: Uncultured pearls are for plebes
bankerman: Hopefully we’ll be there soon with diamonds.
Wzup: Damn hipster pearls, gotta be all “cultured” and stuff.
The_Nightman_82: My life and economy was nearly destroyed due to my reliance on muff diving
Very smooth belly landing

Lord_Dreadlow: He even saved the props!
That was about as good as it gets without gear down.
DeMoCo81: I’ve flown on commercial flights that had a rougher landing than that.
huggiesdsc: I did a paper on this once. It turns out with training procedures these days belly landings are safer than you might imagine. I always thought landing gear failure was catastrophic, but if they burn enough fuel to lose weight they can survive a belly landing pretty consistently.
pirates_never_lie: What is the cost to repair a plane that was damaged in a belly landing?
R32_: They really should have used the landing gear for a smoother landing but to each their own I guess.
fin_ss: [here’s](https://youtu.be/vKo4Eee7V3s) a video of a 767 performing a gear up landing back in 2011. IIRC there was a hydraulic leak after the gear and flaps were retracted after take off, they continued all the way to Warsaw, realised that the gear would not deploy, performed a go around and then landed it on its tummy. Investigators found a breaker had been popped that protected the alternate gear deployment system, they lifted the plane off the runway, reset the breaker and the gear deployed just fine. The aircraft was written off.

Luk—: the pilot also managed to get a nice warm sun light after touching down !
BirdSikx: How to butter the runway.
flyblackhills: Holy crap…the level of speculation on this Twin Commanche gear up is outstanding!!!
The level of damage to this aircraft will be minimal, and will require some sheet metal repair, possible a couple of stringers to repair. The guy got plum lucky that the props stopped horizontal. The proper technique is to establish adequate approach airspeed, and once you are committed, feather props, cut mixture, and use starter to rotate engine so props are horizontal.
The sheet metal damage will probably set him back a a few thousand in labor, but if the engines we’re running, or even windmilling, it would have set him back 10’s of thousands.
Having worked about 15 gear up incidents like this, my only critique is that he ended up a couple of feet left of centerline…
CopperNT: Belly belly nice!
JasonAdkins: That was awesome!
zRawrasaurusREXz: I doubt that the belly is still smooth.
Ajm03006: That centerline landing was landed better than most copilots I’ve flown with, with landing gear, in a helicopter….
NirvanicSunshine: Boop!
wasu6: Looks almost as if it was the correct way to land
thatashley_: I leaned forward then thrusted back as he slowed, like I was in the plane with him/her.
ArconV: Buttered the bread on that landing.
runway_bananacop: I was expecting sparks or something of that sort. Didn’t expect it’d go this smoothly. Kudos to the pilot
Ironclad74: I concur.
grandvega: Pilot is belly landing while passengers on board are belly dancing
Walstie: What is the backstory? Everyone seems to assume there was a landing gear malfunction, is that what happened? Or was this pilot error?
purrpul: That was better than a lot of gear down landings! Just gotta buff it out and he’ll be good to go again!
Whiskiz: Using landing gear is so mainstream. teehee.
henrybutsch: Why did he stop one propeller before the other?
slaytanic667: Yep. That’ll take the paint off
brendan_orr: Pilots: In this event, what would be on the checklist after coming to a rest?
85739810173712299042: That guy’s ditched before…
