For anyone who sees this who isn’t from the country.
This isn’t some freak blackout that did it. We have a single semigovernmental power provider called Eskom. They are … bad. They are terrible at their jobs. Their are not only inept, but also corrupt, and also have enough government ties to make the corruption disappear. Also, to make sure competition disappears. Yaaaay state sanctioned monopoly.
As a result, we have scheduled blackouts daily across the country, called ‘load shedding’. At the moment, this is typically around 10 hours a day for most people, though they seem to have cut back to about four hours a day for the last week. However, they’ve said they’re likely to increase it in the near future, but we don’t know details.
But yeah, turns out turning off your entire economy and all private energy use for half the day cuts your emissions. Personally, I think going for green energy or nuclear would have been preferable, but hey. Glad there’s some silver lining.

Hahahahaha well yeah, my power will be off for 9.5 hours tomorrow. That’ll cut emissions.
