Vaelkyrim: It’s entirely possible to teach yourself piano. As with any new skill, it’s a matter of perseverance and practice. Get yourself a keyboard, then spend a bit learning the note name of each key, and also where each note is written on the treble clef and bass clef. Learn the notes within the clefs first. Don’t worry about the notes above/below the written lines for now.
After you know these basics, find some beginner piano sheet music and practice. There are countless tutorials on YouTube for whatever you want to know, but once you know how to read sheet music, everything is a matter of Practice.
HansDieterVonSiemens: There are different approaches to this, depending on the kind of music you want to play. In general: Get a (good) teacher. It really helps but you can go without. It‘s important to keep in mind: You can learn about everything on the internet. Just google it. You just have know what you need to look for and with that i can help.
The first and foremost step is learning to handle the piano: Your fingers need to learn where the keys are, your ears need to learn what what a key sounds like and your brain needs to learn which tunes fit together. To achieve all of this you just need to play. It doesn‘t matter wether you learn songs by tutorials on youtube, learn by chords, learn reading notes or look at the synthesia versions of songs on YouTube (this one i can recommend for beginners). I would choose depending on your preferred style of music: For Jazz it‘s chords, for classical music it‘s notes and for pop and movie scores it‘s Synthesia. If you now got a way of knowing what to play: Practise. the more the better.
Now there are many more steps to become a piano player, but this is the first step. Dont forget that it will take a lot of time and patience, but it is really worth it.
If you really are interested in learning more, feel free to contact me right away. I play since i‘m 5 yrs old and am by no means a professional, but nevertheless talented and i know a lot.
