Right now you can drive trucks within state borders at 18 years old and in the western states those trucks can have 2-3 trailers and weigh over 105,000 lbs. They are just restricted from driving those trucks across state lines.
This program allows people 18-20 who are currently allowed to drive trucks anyways to cross state lines in a supervised program.
The whole intrastate/interstate disconnect has always been silly anyways. It should be 18+ for both or 21+ for both.
Well let’s see…..it worked out so well for the 4 deceased people and 6 injured people on I-70 eastbound near Denver with a 23 year old rookie driver from Cuba…..sure turn the teens loose!!!!!
16, 17, 18 year olds marched off to be torn to sheds in the trenches of France in WWI. These same “boys” would also have been working on the family farm, around large livestock and dangerous equipment, working their asses off. Under the right circumstances, young people can do amazing things. Today some kids start driving go-karts and mini-bikes and ATVs at a very early age and are much better drivers than many out there. Hopefully this works out, and doesn’t turn into Fury Road.

Again, the shortage issue facing the trucking industry is not a labor shortage, it is a wage shortage.
