looklistencreate: Ataturk did it because he wanted to westernize and secularize the country so they’d be more like Europe and less like the Middle East. He also changed the Turkish alphabet to the Latin one instead of the Arabic one.
darth_hotdog: When I went to Turkey I bought a fez from a street shop because I needed one for my doctor who costume I was putting together back home.
Would I have potentially gotten in trouble if I had for some stupid reason decided to wear it there? Is it legal for them to sell them?
jperth73: I don’t recall your name, but your, fez, is familiar.
vguy72: I said, Good day!
Anthonys455: The Doctor got into too many shenanigans
impactblue5: [Cam Newton](https://usatftw.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/ap_vikings_panthers_football_95944139.jpg?w=1000&h=727) has now been BANNED from Turkey.
ThegreatestPj: It was banned, “just like that!”
donkeyhinge: But Fez’s are cool
Frostytips42069: You shitting me? FEZZES ARE COOL
Led37zep: It’s perfectly legal to wear one in Pinellas Park, Florida.
NerdWithWit: The US should consider this with fedoras.
bertiebees: Well that is super disappointing. At least they still have bath houses.
ComradeSomo: When I was a child I visited Turkey and, of course, one of the first things I set my eyes on was a fez. I wore it non-stop the whole trip, and whenever I would walk up and down Sultanahmet Square all the old fellows would come up and tap me on the top of the head – it must have happened a thousand times! Very pleasant memories, back before Erdoğan became a dictator.
Fartknocker500: Never gonna do it without the Fez on.
PastelFlamingo150: Aren’t they from Morrocco?
Halo77: Dr. Who fans there must be devastated!
Moonpile: I guess I’m never gonna do it in Turkey then.
10thtimelord: Bow-ties, Fezzes, and Stetsons Are Cool
sxwc77: thought this was r/tf2 for a second
FatQuack: “Fezzes are cool.”
“Fezzes are illegal!”
*Dr. Who steps into the Tardis and disappears*
RudolphMorphi: Did Tommy Cooper ever do a gig in Turkey?
_Mr-Skeltal_: Isn’t the fez only worn by old-timey bellhops and organ grinder monkeys nowadays?
LordAcorn: So they are never going to do it *with* the fez on?
FFG_Adam: How dare they! Fez’ are cool!
Renn1wurt: Good.
throwawaynodigits: Maybe they are banned by law, but it is not enforced. I went on holiday to turkey and there was this ‘ice tea guy’ at the beach. He always had a fez on (Not something that looked like one…) while he was walking by everyones beds shouting: “Ice tea! Ice tea!” And you could get some ice tea if you like.
Overwatch_Sosa: I used to wear a fez in Runescape and pretend I had a santa hat on
Bulkogi: Selling Santa hat 30m!
LayneLowe: Steely Dan – The Fez
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdNWfZZN6Ho
iamnotbillyjoel: can we whril dervishingly?
scrotesmcgaha: I guess we ARE gonna do it without the fez on. Sorry Steely Dan.
invictusb: Yeah it is not illegal though…
Blazing_bacon: We really missed out on a Doctor Who episode, didn’t we?
Solaterre: The Fez originated in Cyprus and was popular in Greece. Sultan Mamoud II mandated it to be worn by Ottoman officials in 1826 while banning turbans that signified wealth, rank and class. Not modern enough for Attaturk 100 years later.
Momanon: Those poor fez dispensers.
Verdict_US: TIL Fez had a hat named after him.
