cieluv: >The images don’t have the same quality as clinical x-ray images: “They’re taken with Scotch tape, so there’s room for improvement,” says Camara.
This had me laughing my ass off. This reminds me of the DSL(?) sent over wet string from last week.
the_pun_life: Can confirm.
Soure: After being bitten by radioactive scotch tape am now Scotchtapeman, able to do whatever a scotch tape can.
Jinxed_and_Cursed: What about a vacuum makes it so it produces xrays? Or why doesn’t it produce x rays in the atmosphere?
PaintMeSunrise: TIL that when you bite down on wintergreen-flavored LifeSavers candies in the dark, they glow…
RaisinSwords: TIL that websites will block access if youre in incognito mode. Fuck that
neobenedict: Here is the article for those limited by the retarded paywall:
LegendaryFalcon: > ..unpeeling Scotch tape at a speed of three centimeters per second produces large numbers of x-rays.
We can do three times that rate in less than a second, cheap imaging my dudes.
SnowyNW: Science better stop smoking weed soon, this shit is getting ridiculous.
nu7kevin: Does that mean peeling duck tape is like setting off a nuke?
InZaneFlea: Dude. Last week I was home at lunch, watching an episode of Bones where all the power was off, and they set up a vacuum, and scotch tape, and were all ‘Pulling it off will xray this bone!’ and I was like ‘Well Bones jumped the fucking shark.’
Turns out I was just stupid 🙁
petzl20: I wish theyd explain how being in a vacuum alters the reaction.
todd10k: Why only under vacuum conditions, whats the difference between that and regular usage?
BaronBifford: I wonder if workers in tape factories have health problems related to this. Like, a higher incidence of cancer or something.
ThisThatGuy: Putterman!
dbaliki918: If you peel it fast enough in a dark room, it makes blue light.
glitchygreymatter: I thought this was r/diy. Tried it. I need a new vacuum and lead underpants.
Black_Moons: I’ll have to remember this in case I am ever in a vacuum.
Cycleoflife: Huge missed opportunity, MacGyver
Janojussi: /u/CodyDon do an experiment on this, please.
knightsmarian: >…researchers have shown that rapidly unwinding a roll of Scotch tape inside a vacuum generates not only visible light but also enough x-rays to image a human finger.
OP may have sensationalized the title a bit.
OriginalDonDada: How does one get into the vacuum to peel the scotch tape, let alone stick it to something? The hoses on those things are incredibly small – I can’t fit my hand inside.
Does the vacuum need to be turned on? This seems tricky.
kreig369: I vacuumed scotch tape just yesterday and it went around the roller quite a bit. Was I overexposed? I’ve been feeling OK but did have a headache for a bit. And a bowel movement that was a perfect circle.
yabucek: Good thing that video showed the peeling mechanism for more than 0.3 seconds
NowWithMoreFreedom: So Dave the vacuum chamber isn’t being used. So why don’t you and I go in and peel some scotch tape?
Maybe_its_Maybelline: Is this more than the bananas?
boborg: bones?
SinanZee: Question: I often have to peel tape off of film in a dark room. When I do I see light similar to the thumbnail above. Is this what that is?
crawtators: This is where my university’s research dollars go. Stoners playing with scotch tape, vacuum pumps, and dental film. “John…im so stoned…let put the tape IN the vacuum tube…and then…put our hand on it…WITH XRAY FILM”
lovelyhappyface: Putting scotch tape on your thigh and forgetting about it, then shaving your legs produces lots off bleeding.
Maaahgo: I used to see this when I opened a bandaid in the dark I thought I was crazy and nobody ever believed me.
mtucker502: Great. Wrapping presents can give you cancer.
JustANormalGuy2_0: >a cheap, simple source of x-rays for clinical imaging.
I can just imagine the nurse be like, *”OK, i can only do this once, and i need to to hold your breath. it will only be a second, but i will need to make the room a vacuum chamber. ” as he gets a roll of tape out from cupboard.
MonkeyFu: Christmas just got RADIOCATIVE!!!!
“I’ll go out with you to see all the new mutations on Christmas Day!”
-Christmas at Ground Zero
Penguinmaster153: From Title
> produces radiation powerful enough to xray the human body
From Article
> produces enough radiation to image a human finger.
Quantity ends up off by several factors, but fuck it, it sounds cooler to imply the entire “human body”, right?
Alreaddy_reddit: The best thing about this article is that someone named Camara is talking about the best way to take pictures
Clemsontigger16: Scotch tape and a vacuum? I have both of those things!
abethunder: If you do this with duct tape not in a vacuum, you get something similar. I forgot what it was though since it’s been so long since that experiment in school.
ItsEd_u: Insane.
IronicMetamodernism: Carlos Camara taking x-ray photos. That’s great.
chatrugby: Scotch tape causes cancer?
