I used to work a wilderness therapy company that did this. We called it “gooning”. Kids get woken up at 1 or 2 AM and taken out of their homes by transporters. And transported to this program. Once there, they were told they would spend 8-12 weeks backpacking around the desert and surrounding mountains.
A lot of them were dicks. We had to take their boots/shoes and most of their clothing at night so they wouldn’t run away (even though we were 10 miles from any established roads). If they were on watch, we had to fold them into a tarp and sleep on top of the folded tarp so they couldn’t run. They had yell their name when going to the bathroom so we knew they weren’t running. And then we wandered around with 60lb backpacks on trying to find the drop site where the base staff would leave us water, firewood etc.
I’m a 2012 survivor to one of these camps, Island View out of Utah. They rebranded under *Elevations* after permanently disabling a teen girl for not getting out of bed. Ask me anything.

This happened to two of my close friends and it did absolutely nothing to change their behavior.
