the idea seems to be that by increasing overtime hours per week, employees can then opt to concentrate more of their work hours into larger chunks on certain weeks, and then concentrate more of their time off in larger chunks on other weeks.
in theory, this really just means that the workers are working the same amount, just with different time distribution. in practice, many worry this will just lead to workers working more hours overall.
i’m not an expert, but given korea’s old school face time culture, i’d instinctively expect that this would just increase aggregate work hours. also not a really great sign that this proposal is only backed by the current government and a business lobbying group, and pretty much denounced by everyone else.
People are complaining about 52 hour work weeks. If you raise it to 69 then lower it back to 52 people will be happy they have a 52 hour work week instead of 69. Fool proof plan to boost morale.
69 hours per week? Fuck that. I’m out of gas after 50. 60 is 5 days of 12 hour days. 69 would be 10 hours per day every fucking day. When are you supposed to buy groceries and make babies?

Our fertility rate is decreasing, what should we do?
People: Please decrease work hours!
Govt: How about we turn overtime hours to work-life currency? This ought to boost it.

Headline is kind of misleading, that would be the new maximum including overtime (based on a 40hr work week)

In completely unrelated news, S. Korea, which has the lowest birthrate of any nation, just saw it’s birthrate drop even further.
