Singapore may be oppressive, but they are *consistent*, and the trade-off is an extremely good quality of life, great conditions for business, and the government is extremely predictable.
The authoritarian governments to fear are the capricious ones. Where you get a free pass every now and then, get comfortable, and then THWACK.
