Can we also address the fact that Donald Trump is not only 1st in polling with Republican voters, but *also allowed to run after an honest to God coup attempt?*
This is sensationalism predicated on the fact that most people are not aware of the many ways the US is defended.
23 states currently have a “State Denfense Force” that reports directly to state leadership and does not fall under the organizational structure of the Department of Defense or the federal government. 6 of the states also have navel defensive forces.
This is because the states have the right and responsibility to provide for the defense of their citizens. The National Guard can be federalized under the National Defense Act. This is why these states choose to maintain their own militaries.

22 states have a “State Guard” like this, that does not report to the National Guard. Calling it a “private army” is manufactured hysteria.
