The guy has a history of mental instability going back years.
I feel empathy for him. He was manipulated by the people behind Qananon to such a point that he cooked up some fantasy world where he was a viking soldier for the cause. In the end he essentially cosplayed himself into the Qanon Mascot and stormed the nation’s capitol building.
Yes, he fucked up majorly, and needs to have punishment. But he also needs as much mental help and structured support as we can give him.
Showing compassion to those that were mislead, show genuine remorse, especially to those that are mentally unwell, and giving them a path to redemption and mental well being is the type of reform I support for our justice system. Of course there needs to be clear terms for them about the types of activities that will increase their terms under care or reverting their term back to prison for those that are discovered that were playing the system.
