Good. Now how about a supplemental policy for that policy that states that if a police officer was ever a part of hate or extremist groups, they must be removed from their positions immediately.
I know this isn’t r/law but this is actually a tricky thing to enact and get right, and in fact this one is pretty broad and is likely to get challenged.
>”advocates for systematic illegal prejudice, oppression, or discrimination, including disparate treatment, against an individual or group on the basis of any protected class under federal, state, and local law, including race, color, sex, gender identity, age, religion, disability, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, military status, source of income, credit history, criminal record, or criminal history.”
>
>It would also include any group that “commits or advocates for acts of unlawful force or violence to deny others their rights under the Constitution of the United States or the State of Illinois, or to achieve goals that are political, religious, discriminatory, or ideological in nature” or “commits or advocates for acts of terrorism or others activities which seek to overthrow, destroy, or alter the form of government of the United States by unconstitutional means.”
>
>The policy also reminds officers they are prohibited from using social media to post content “that is disparaging to a person or group based on race, color, sex, gender identity, age, religion, disability, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, military status, source of income, credit history, criminal record, criminal history, or any other protected class.” That would include liking, following, sharing, or otherwise redistributing such content “with the intent to promote, support, or otherwise endorse a criminal or biased organization or its activities.”
If that is the actual language then I foresee problems.
Subway has a current ad that says “Now Slicing Fresh Deli Meat.” My 10 year old daughter was grossed out. I asked why. “If they’re making a big deal about NOW, what were they doing before?”
Wait wait how will this stop them from joining? The ones that want to do it will just keep quieter about it. Isn’t the same argument pro gun people use about guns, if we outlaw them the bad guys will still find a way to have them.

If they can’t recruit from hate groups, how will they possibly fill all the vacancies?

Well this country certainly has a ways to go with police reform if this is considered progress.

Perhaps a better policy would be to ban members of hate groups from joining the police?

Police are supposed to be impartial…they shouldn’t be allowed to join any groups.

Police officers are by default in a hate group

No reason why I was reminded of that.
