Soooo the governor is offering high-school grads jobs that pay (angrily punches a calculator) $2.87 an hour and the money can only go towards paying for college and they only get it after working for a full year.
I’m gonna need a lot of popcorn for when the results of this program come in.
While I would love to see a true revitalization of the Civilian Conservation Corps providing young adults a chance to learn construction skills while benefiting the country and earning college tuition….
…maybe pay better than Great Depression wages which were $30 a month ($660 in today’s money)…

It’s a good ploy but these kids are probably expecting their student loans to be forgiven by the time they’re expected to pay them back.

Imagine working for a whole year and only getting $6000 dollars…

It’s not the worst idea, taking a gap year, since so many head right to college without any idea what they really want to do.
But it doesn’t seem worth it for so little money. Does that even pay for a year at a community college anymore?

Considering that they also get food and shelter – doesn’t this mean slaves are actually paid better than this?

Just an FYI from a quick Google, the stipend is ON TOP of $15/hr base pay upon program completion. Not a bad deal.
