*The Tragedy of Heterosexuality* by Jane Ward goes into a great deal of detail regarding why men feel guilt, shame, or other powerful negative emotions when they are unable to establish an intimate relationship with a woman. It essentially comes down to the culture of entitlement men grow up in and inhabit most of their lives, one which marks a man’s success by by his romantic partnership with a woman in such a way that allows him access to her domestic, emotional, and reproductive labor.
Failure to claim this, for straight men, is seen as a significant social failure akin to losing access to something you feel owed to you since birth.
