That sounds like something out of a movie, everything is doing good, and then suddenly WHAM stupid teenage driver kills a man… not sure what she should be charged with (I used to think the idea that she killed a man on accident would be be enough, but I lost faith in humanity to do that long ago).
Edit, turns out vehicular manslaughter is the charge, with a (likely) modifier for being on the phone or otherwise distracted. (You know, maybe they should start actually enforcing those cellphone while driving laws)
When i was a kid(40 yrs ago)and living in the rural countryside. My friends and I would ride bikes all day on the backroads. I still live on the same road. There’s no way i’d let my kids on the roads with bikes. Population growth, cell phones, and simply the amount of people driving with no situational awareness are now a major hazard. I quit riding motorcycles 20yrs ago. In 15yrs of driving 100 miles a daily working. I’ve seen 4 motorcyclists Killed by cars. If you are in the road or near the road, you have to be paying attention. The road is a dangerous place in or out of a car.
Helping ducks is dangerous. Similar thing happened here on the trancanada. Lady got out to rescue ducklings caught on the freeway by the barrier on the inside of a turn. Guy with his daughter came around the corner on a big bike, swerved, spun, died.
Sadly this doesn’t surprise me, Placer county has some of the worst drivers I’ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Very glad to not be near that shithole anymore

The last picture ever taken of him is hon saving ducklings.
