I’m not sure how it’s even possible to not find the appendix, but okay, let’s accept that this can happen. But how in the hell do you decide to just remove a random piece of colon instead of closing the patient back up?!? Even worse, one of the surgeons apparently made light of the situation instead of keeping his damn mouth shut. I hope this dude gets ALL the money he’s suing for.
I’m actually stunned that this happened at UW. It makes me wonder if they are saying that he couldn’t find the appendix to cover something else up. Like this goes beyond gross negligence.
This man likely had a severely inflamed appendix. When it gets that bad, it is in fact hard to find the appendix. In the sense that it’s so caked in to connective tissue, inflamed surrounds tissue, that it isn’t
Possible or even reasonable to dissect it. Instead you do a removal of the very first part for he colon, leaving the ileo-Cecal valve intact. This man had an insufficiency of the area dissected, leaking to sepsis, and to reoperation. The reality is, this is a possible sequence of events of severe appendicitis. Frivolous law suit, and he will likely lose if the doctors documented everything properly.

Does this look like an appendix to you? Close enough, I’ve got a tee time to make.

Shit, Dave I can’t find it! What do I do?
Fuck, I don’t know, Phil. It’ll look suspicious if we don’t take something out. Just start cutting!

Trainee surgeon. Was it his first day? Did he even pass his anatomy class? Both surgeons should be fired and licences revoked.

In Seattle. I’d only expect something like that on Greys Anatomy.

Larry: I can’t find his appendix….
Albert: Well, if we don’t remove it, we won’t get paid.
Larry: Yeah, we’ll need the money from this surgery to pay for the malpractice suit.
Albert: Good point, just grab the smallest bit of him you can find, should be cheaper than the big ones.
Larry: What would I do without you Albert, you’re always a step ahead!
