The best book I have ever seen on the history, streams of thought, social and historical background, sects and practices of Buddhism is “Buddhism: A concise Introduction” by Huston Smith and Philip Novak. 9/10 would read again.
As far as practice goes, the world is full of good audio, podcasts, blogs, books, etc.
