“The British Museum in London, the National Museums of Scotland and the Great North Museum: Hancock have decided to change when they use the term “mummy” as part of a broader re-examination of how exhibits are described, labeled, and presented to the public. Instead, they will use “mummified remains of” or “mummified person”, to describe the Egyptian artifacts whenever possible.”
>“The word ‘mummy’ is not incorrect, but it is dehumanizing, whereas using the term ‘mummified person’ encourages our visitors to think of the individual,” a spokeswoman for National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh told the Daily Mail, which first reported the shift.
Surely this de-animalises any animals that have been mummified?????
JFC people, worry more about all the stolen colonised stuff you have in your museums, as opposed to this!
“Dehumanizing” to call them mummies, not dehumanizing to loot their graves and put them for public display. How about you send them back to the countries you stole them from?
Museums: In order to be sensitive to deceased people, we will call mummies ‘mummified remains’. We often know who these people are, so should respect that by naming them, too.
Egypt: How about being sensitive to live people, and returning the items of our heritage that you stole?
So they are using the official terminology? But instead the move will be used in the culture wars huh.. I’m sure we’ll blame it in those bloody trans people as well!!
I guess if you asked a random Egyptian if they’d rather have their antiquities back or referred to in a made up non-offensive way, they’d probably think you were trolling them.
