“headlight wiring” is an oversimplification to the point that it’s borderline dishonest. The thieves pried the front fender off the car to unplug the headlight control computer and use it’s connection to the internal network in the car to hack the main ECU.
The hack doesn’t have anything in particular to do with headlights, the headlight computer was just the easiest thing to access in that particular car. In a different car it might be the infotainment computer, transmission computer, or anything else.
