That doesn’t sound to crazy. Dowries are a big deal in that culture.
One family couldn’t pay the other enough so they want out. It sounds like they aren’t legally able to exit the deal based on the payment at this point; so they came up with a new reason.
Gives a new meaning to family court though. This would be a much better family court to watch as opposed to the depressing awful sadness that is family court in the USA.
It’s better if the downry/gifts are returned and the whole thing is called off. Forcing the marriage at this point may mean abuse for the bride from bitter and resentful in laws
