*Our school is two and a half years old. Every year we show that picture in the Renaissance Art class taught to our sixth graders,” he added. The problem that arose in this instance was that the procedure for notifying parents of the upcoming lesson was not followed, according to Bishop.”*
*We aren’t trying to ban the picture,” he said, referring to the statue of David. “We think it’s beautiful, but we are going to make sure the concept of parental rights is supreme in Florida and at our charter school,” he added*.
Many, maybe most, sixth graders today carry around what would have been considered a supercomputer when I was a kid. And those are connected to the internet where they can quickly and easily find content far, far worse than a picture of a statue of David from one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived.
Btw, Michelangelo was a homosexual. I do wonder if this fact being mentioned or discussed along with his work is part of the issue here. But, I dunno if it was or wasn’t.
And others things about him too, like him being a sculptor who was basically forced to paint the Sistine Chapel by the Pope at that time, (Edit: found a source to confirm this https://archive.org/details/oxfordcompaniont0000unse_r1z5/page/475/mode/2up ) I think that is accurate but it has been a long time since I read up on him so I’m open to correction.
He lived at a time, and in a place, when homosexuals, especially homosexual men, faced the very real threat violent persecution, of death, due to their existence. It is difficult to discuss his work without discussing his life and his times. And my hunch is that may be part of what this is all about. I doubt it is about discussing the biblical David.
