It is about time. The current restrictions are ridiculous. In what world did it make any sense to prohibit a monogamous gay man who has been with his partner for 20 years from giving blood when a single straight person who slept with 20+ people last month can donate with no problem?
Some of the restrictions are ridiculous.
I lived in England during one of their worst bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow) outbreaks back in the 80s and to this day, I cannot donate blood. I mean, my blood is B+ so it’s not rare or anything but I’d still love to help.
The new restrictions will allow only monogamous gay men to donate. It’s still discriminatory, still applies a standard to gay men that doesn’t exist for anyone else, and still pointless since ALL donated blood is tested for any diseases/pathogens anyway. “Easing” is not enough; it’s an improvement, but it’s ridiculous that it’s not simply being eliminated.

It was originally a wild overreaction to the AIDS crisis and then it was never rolled back.

Canada removed it on their blood supply. They test on each instead of bulking donations and testing. Removes the chance for further supply spoilage

I guess we have to risk getting HIV from blood donations to make some people feel better.

I don’t see why anything should make a difference for blood donations other than obviously blood transmissible diseases
