ELI5: How do we know when we’ve chewed something long enough?

| Category: Explain

E.g. If you’re chewing a steak, how does your mouth(?)/brain(?) determine that the steak has been broken down enough to be digested?

Is there a certain level of “broken down” that food has to reach before our brains consider it swallowable?

CheesyPoofInthusiust: When it’s time to swallow, you have a thing at the back of your throat called the pharynx. Usually, air passes through it when breathing through either you nose or mouth. But when you’re chewing, food starts you gather in it. Once it’s reached a certain amount food, it triggers you to swallow, which is also why you might have to take multiple swallows per bite. (I just looked this all up on the internet, so if anyone knows any of this is wrong, feel free to correct me)

SooOverpowered: I think it is that when your tongue feels that the food that you chewed on is fine enough it will trigger you to swallow. But sometimes you get choked because the piece that you chew did not touched the tongue at all (imagine a blender with the blades straight instead of being curved and the stuff at the top is not crushed at all).
This is what i believed, if wrong please correct me.

carmex2121: Why are bricks considered superior to slabs of concrete? Just esthetics?

Virtootles: Do you ever stare at a picture for a long time expecting it to be a gif?

robotto: This is stamped concrete. I knew a guy who was trying to set up a business in the UK where we dont have this yet. It is much cheaper than actual bricks and you get a wide variety of designs and colours to choose from.

scryharder: Here’s the website with more advanced techniques for when you see the funky semi tile designs or odd shapes. They also use it for sidewalks and colored concrete. The advanced ones have huge plastic stamps, sometimes needing a big lifter:

WiseOldSilverback: Had a driveway like this once, those grooves collect dirt and are impossible to keep clean. They are deeper and wider and emptier than the spacing between pavers or bricks.

Esprit-de-lescali: Printcrete!

googlygamers: :O

EvanMackenzie403: Just get one of those but make it a really long boi so it does it all at once

cuvkiller: Bricks too, the pit a stencil and spray it red, or whatever color required, and then lift off the stencil and boom.
