Yeah, that is kinda weord.
Rolling the dice on the “get woke, go broke” gamble
I don’t mind that, intelligent races possess self determination and self awareness. Locking any character into an alignment seems lazy and cheap. Flesh your characters out, give them motivations of their own.
They also risk the homogenization of lore. Cultures do have differences, and those differences express as different priorities and values and world views. Saying that there are zero differences between disparate peoples is as “problematic” as defining all members of that group by a single property. Basically, instead of stereotyping a fictional person according to a made-up stereotype, they’re engaging in metaphorical neocolonialism and erasing the made-up lived experiences of a made-up people. Really you can spin any situation any way you want, if you read enough Tumblr 😑
And anyway… every nasty stereotype of every major race has at least one hero or famous Drizzt-alike who undermines those assumptions.
So you know, just use an older edition for now.
Our current party is “evil” and I’m playing an – *ahem* – undead mummy Troll bard. Our current goal is to kill Acererak because he wants to kill us for….reasons….and we had a recent encounter with a few solars and a Planetar where we were getting our butts kicked but we all agreed to go our separate ways because we **both** wanted Acererak removed.
So, uh, yeah it’s all a bit grey even if you’re an evil monster?
Things seem to have changed since 2nd Edition.
Mind flayers probably do have a rough childhood.
