>**”As a chef, I will never make fried rice again,” Wang said in his apology on Monday after taking down the video.**
>Mao Anying, a Chinese military officer, was killed by US bombers on 25 November 1950 during the Korean war. A persistent but frequently denied rumour says he was trying to cook egg fried rice instead of taking shelter, and the smoke from the fire exposed his position to enemy forces.
>One commenter wrote on Weibo of Wang’s video: “As an ordinary person who gets a lot of money by posting some cooking videos, he should at least not be disrespectful to this country and the people who sacrificed for this country.”
>In 2018, China’s government criminalised the act of insulting “heroes and martyrs” said to have sacrificed themselves for China or the Communist party cause.
His pledge to never make fried rice again is what made me double check I wasn’t actually reading an Onion article.
That’s shocking considering that Wang Gang is easily the most widely known Chinese chef in the world right now because of his popular YouTube channel. The Chinese really turned on him for something so utterly trivial and irrelevant.
I never heard of egg fried rice protests before but looking into it now Wang Gang already did this before in 2020 (unless this article is referring to the same event 3 years ago).
It’s not a China issue, its a netizen issue. He didn’t break that law about insulting martyrs, since the egg fried rice thing is a rumour that has been officially denied by the Chinese government. This is just a case of stupid Internet backlash by netizens who have nothing better to do and haven’t learnt to touch grass. There are plenty of examples in Japan (forcing an idol to shave her hair because she has a boyfriend), Korea (plenty of shitty internet bullying examples leading to entertainers committing suicide) etc.
People who spend inordinate amounts of time on the internet just end up wielding their “authority” because of a stupid sense of power. Look at reddit and discord moderators who bully members. It’s a fucking shitty thing that needs to be stopped.
He didn’t “offend China”. A bunch of social media idiots got mad at him and a media personality chimed in against egg fried rice without explicitly mentioning the chef.
The fuck is wrong with the Guardian these days with their trash headlines?
