most gay male slashfic is written by straight women.

“So danmei writers use a website called Ao3 to publish missing sex scenes.”

do they? still? didn’t AO3 get blacklisted in China in 2020 (and fan culture tried to burn the world down as a result)?

My immediate reactions after reading this:

    * Love the mention of KFC sponsorship XD I wish I could have gone, but it’s okay. I never liked the definition of BL as “written by and for straight women,” but it’s okay. I’m not sure about that, but it’s probably near the top. * Overall, it has a very “Danmei 101” vibe. However, I suppose that’s essentially the approach they can use with this.

Seems like it would serve the same purpose as harlequin novels or Twilight.

.. that is, it lets the reader project themselves into the role of one of the characters and vicariously experience the romance.

Some of their most internationally successful TV series such as “The Untamed” (and its animation) are adapted from such fictions.

Largely faithful to plot but by removing certain scenes and converting undertones to “brotherhood”.

I haven’t read it myself and I can’t evaluate how it portrays same-sex relations since I am straight myself, but based on what I know, the most popular translated danmei are “Heaven Official’s blessing” and “The Founder of Diabolism” (source of the untamed).

If anyone is interested, they can try them.
