I had hiccups for about ten days the last time I was using Prednisone. I’d used Prednisone countless times before without issues, so it never clicked with me that it was only after starting another course of the medicine that I started the hiccups. Then, I finished the course of medicine and the hiccups stopped. That was a very unpleasant week or two; I can only imagine how hiccups for a year would be.
I had this happen to me for the second time in my life last November. I was near tears by day 4(?) because they got so painful this time and it was next to impossible to sleep. I can’t imagine going a year… That’s horrible.
For anyone that maybe suffering reading this– the only somewhat reliable relief I could get was by swallowing gobs of peanut butter. Guess it stimulates the vagus nerve. Worked about ~40-50% of the time, and could buy me some time before they’d came back. Ultimately I ended up in the Urgent Care, and whatever they gave me had me mostly back to normal in about a days time.

A few treatments for persistent hiccups are as follows:
1. A very old antipsychotic whose mechanism of action is unknown
2. Rubbing the eyes
3. a back rub
The latter two function by stimulating vasovagal centers.

Hiccups that last all day are horrifying. I hope the surgery goes well and heals him.
