Her first sentence doesn’t sit well with me. She was *expecting people to be grateful and overjoyed*. So she did this to make herself feel good obviously. She wanted kudos both in person and on Tik Tok. Period.
Edit: she went in with expectations about how people *should* react to her offer and she was disappointed when she didn’t get the reaction she wanted.
She needs to re-examine her motivations. She could have bought a store gift card and told a store store manager whose order to apply it to, and done a good deed and remained anonymous. Even lurked to make sure it was done if she MUST record it for Tik tok clout 🙄
She didn’t want to be an anonymous donor. She wanted to broadcast to the world. And was shocked that no one wanted to participate in her narcissistic game.
The article is unclear whether she was filming these people to get their reactions too. If so, I can see a lot of people not wanting to be part of her Tik Tok channel.
This reminds me of a scene in *Hogfather* that takes apart stories like this: a king brings a feast to a peasant on Hogswatch (basically Christmas) but as Death points out, the king is only doing it to make *himself* feel better by doing a single act of charity for a peasant who didn’t ask him to.
It’s the same here: she isn’t doing this to benefit those people, she’s doing it to make herself feel better by “helping” people who didn’t ask for or want it so she can rake in the rewards from her platform. Those people were right to refuse to play her game.
As someone who hates being filmed and photographed yeah I’d look at her like she’s a weirdo and decline her offer too. Lots of people would be instantly turned off by the camera or phone in their face filming herself doing the deed. Clearly she’s just doing it for clout and to pat herself on the back for being such a “good” person.
“I hope they don’t look at me thinking I’m some weirdo”. You are. If you want to do good deeds just do them no need to film strangers and upload them to Tiktok. Or expect them to cry and thank you so much for what you did.

I agree with the idea in the article that perhaps people were uncomfortable being filmed. Not everyone wants that kind of thing publicized.
I also think there are plenty of people who would say, “I’d *love* my groceries paid for, but maybe someone else needs it more than I do right now.”
